A steering committee on the progress of Iwawa Rehabilitation & Vocational Skills Development Center (IRVSDC) met on Saturday to discuss the strategic plan for reinforcing and advancing the program of rehabilitation and skills promotion at the center.

Committee members in this meeting that was held at IWAWA Island include the ministers of Youth and ICT, Internal security, state Minister of Education, Army spokesperson, representatives from the ministry Local government and Kigali city.

While chairing the meeting, the Minister of Youth and ICT Jean Philbert Nsengimana pointed out that the first step in the advancement strategy is the ownership of the endeavor by all stakeholders.

IWAWA center currently has a total student population of 1930. Among these, 1245 are under rehabilitation, 757 are following literacy and numeracy program, and 488 in language courses and IT. Vocational training has 687 students, 211 doing carpentry, 100 tailoring and 374 training in construction.

Addressing the youth at IWAWA the Minister of Internal security Shiekh Mussa Fazil Harerimana urged them to strive for self-esteem by refraining from the use of drugs and other immoral acts that cause insecurity in the society.

The setting up of transit centers, adding force in the reintegration system at district or sector level, Sanitation and health were also discussed for future better solutions.

Research made by Rwanda Military Hospital and the National University of Rwanda on drug abuse management shows that there is need to educate families which still consider the rehabilitation of their children as punishment.

The steering committee is paving way for a substantial method that will reduce or eradicate the use of drugs and other behaviours that endanger the Rwandan youth.
